Return to Social Media

Jason McDonald’s “Social Media Marketing Workbook” has an endless amount of information solely in Chapter 1. The first half of the chapter contains many examples to help best grasp the basics of building a strong image on social media. The last few pages of the chapter have just as much strong content as the beginning. The end of the chapter focuses on several resources you can use to access and share content. These resources include Feedly, Buzzsumo, Youtube tools, PhotoPin, Fotor, Pablo, StoryBase, Google Email Alerts and Google News.

Feedly can be used to follow blogs you have an interest in or any other content applicable to you. It is also a helpful tool to help you share the content you find with your followers. McDonald also writes that the website can be used to help generate blog post ideas. He rates the website at five stars and I agree with his feedback. After using the website for just a moment, it became clear how easy the website is to navigate and get lost in interesting articles.

PhotoPin, Fotor and Pablo are great websites to help find stock images and editing photos. PhotoPin gives you options to search for specific sizes of images you need. This could be helpful when writing a blog post and not having to worry about how much space the picture would take up. When using Fotor, you are also able to search through a large collection of free stock photos. Fotor also allows you to do simple edits to pictures. Pablo is a simple website to use if you want to add text to a photo. McDonald points out that this website is a great tool for creating memes. These memes would help to connect the advertisement to the viewer in a humorous and attention-grabbing way.

Another emerging tactic to grab user attention is through videos. YouTube has a large set of tools to help you create a strong video presence by making professional and interesting videos. For those wanting to learn more about how YouTube can be used, the website has several easy to navigate categories.

Google also has a few tools to help your online presence. The company offers Google email alerts and Google news. By putting keywords or names into your Google preferences, you will be alerted when companies or anything or anyone posts about your keywords. This allows you to keep track of what is being said or feelings shared about these keywords. Google news is used to provide you with articles relating to any interests you have, your business, or yourself based on the information you provide to the search engine.

These tools are necessary for navigating social media and maintaining an online reputation. Each resource has features suited for any purpose and can be used by anyone.

  1. Thank you for this little summary/review of some of the tools McDonald mentioned in Chapter 1 (amongst all the rest of his plethora of information). I really like the tip about creating an email alert for your name using Google. It was a lot more insightful than his tip on searching for answers to questions on Google (DUH).
